Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • What does propane smell like?

Propane is naturally colorless and odorless, but an additive called ethyl mercaptan is added to make propane smell like rotten eggs to help detect leaks.

  • What should I do if I smell gas?
    1. Do not operate anything that could create a spark or flame.
    2. Get everyone out of the area where you detected a leak.
    3. If safe, turn the tank off.
    4. Call Kruegel Gas Service or your local fire department 24/7 to report the leak.
    5. Do not return to the building until a propane technician or first responder determines it is safe.

  • How do I turn off my propane tank?

The tank can be turned off under the hood by turning the service valve all the way clockwise. Note that if the tank is turned off, a leak check must be completed before service can be restored.

  • Why do I need to have a leak check completed after an interruption of service or out of gas?

NFPA 58 (2020) 6.17.2 states, "Immediately after the gas is turned on into a new system or into a system that has been initially restored after an interruption of service, the piping system shall be checked for leakage."

  • How do I read the gauge to know how much propane I have?

Under the hood, there is a gauge ranging from 0-95. This indicates the percentage of gas left in the tank based on the tank's water capacity.

    For example:

    • A 500-gallon tank at 35% contains 500 × 0.35 = 175 gallons of propane
    • A 1000-gallon tank at 60% contains 1000 × 0.6 = 600 gallons of propane
  • Why is my propane tank not filled to 100%?

Propane expands when the temperature increases. For safety reasons, tanks are only filled to 80% to allow for expansion.
